The pace is accelerating: Writely Acquired By Google.

Upholding our great user experience means everything to us, so we're not accepting new registrations until we've moved Writely to Google's software architecture. If you're interested in giving us a try, we hope you'll get on the waitlist so we can let you know when you'll be able to try out Writely.
I heard an interesting rumor last week, from a friend who had been speaking with a VC about Google. Apparently, the VC had been flown in by Google to a big confab where Google made it clear that they wanted to buy teams of people who had developed cool stuff. Not just to get the stuff, but the teams. Basically telling the VCs to invest in early stage stuff, since there would be an early exit.
I don't know if this is true or just apocraphal, but you can see the value to Google of Writely, either way.
