Richard MacManus digs deep into Trumba Connect, which is an online calendar event gasket, allowing people like the NY Times to have their readers easily download events into their personal calendars:
What is it?At first glance Trumba is hard to fathom. Perhaps being an enterprise application has something to do with that, as those tend to be more complex than most consumer web 2.0 apps. Trumba's latest product release, announced this week, is called Trumba Connect. It's a website calendaring and event marketing solution for companies. Included in this package are tools for publishing and promoting events online, plus connecting those events to personal calendars. It's a hosted service, with prices starting at $99.95 per month.
But I think there is a limited market for Trumba Connect, and one that the services themselves could solve simply by agreeing on a simple import format for events. Looks to me to be a feature, not a company.

There's a big difference between a technology and a service--otherwise, Red Hat wouldn't exist.

Hi Stowe,
You Say: "But I think there is a limited market for Trumba Connect, and one that the services themselves could solve simply by agreeing on a simple import format for events. Looks to me to be a feature, not a company."
While it may be a limited market I think it is pretty big and the while services COULD solve the problem themselves the problem is they aren't. In fact since it's not their core business it's very unlikely they will "all get together" to create a cooperative standard so if Trumba can do it for them I think they have a pretty good business and a useful service for users.
I think Trumba benefits from the Paradox of Choice in that users (or in this case companies) will always choose what's easiest. Easiest is currently really bad event data (non-existent in many/most cases) but by leveraging a third party they could add good event data without doing much.
Just a different take,
Christopher
