Yahoo Messenger for Mac Beta Coming (But Not Quick Enough)

A series of schedule snafus meant that Matthew Skyrm, Yahoo's Director of Product Management for Yahoo Messenger, and I were unable to meet last week at MacWorld. Luckily, Jaqui Cheng os Ars Technica was able to get a glimpse:

[from Infinite Loop: Ars at Macworld: Yahoo! Messenger Beta 2 preview]

The Director of Product Management for Yahoo! Messenger, Matthew Skyrm, walked me through the unreleased beta for Mac OS X as well as the one that they recently announced for Windows Vista. Here are a few of the things you can expect from the next beta of Yahoo! Messenger for Mac:

  • Voice chat
  • Tabbed message windows
  • Message logging/archiving
  • Spotlight integration
  • Phone in and out integration through Yahoo Voice
  • Webcam support
  • Asynchronous IMs (if a friend is logged off and you IM them, the message will wait on the server until they come back online)
  • and more...

I hope to get a chance to see the beta sometime in the upcoming weeks. I am particularly interested in voice and webcam capabilities: according to Jacqui they are going to be present but unintegrated.
