Work Media Going Mainstream: Work Media 2011 Survey And Report

Work Media is becoming mainstream enough to be covered in the NY Times, although Kopytoff starts with Facebook, and then provides only a piece dominated by security issues and spotty usage, but his intro is not bad.

Verne Kopytoff, Companies Erect In-House Social Networks

As social networks increasingly dominate communications in private lives, businesses of all sizes — from tiny start-ups to midsize companies like Nikon to behemoths like Dell — are adopting them for the workplace. Although it is difficult to quantify how many companies use internal social networks, a number of corporate software companies have sensed the opportunity and offer various systems, some free to existing customers, others that charge a fee per user.

It’s one more instance of how consumer technology trends, like the use of tablet computers, are crossing into office life. Because of Facebook, most people are already comfortable with the idea of “following” their colleagues. But in the business world, the connections are between colleagues, not personal friends or family, and the communications are meant to be about work matters — like team projects, production flaws and other routine business issues.

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that their isn’t much hard data in here since no one is doing an exhaustive study on the adoption of work media tools. So, at present the discussion has been very anecdotal, and driven by vendors’ press releases and unsupported claims.

A few months ago, I launched workmedia.ly, a website dedicated to reviewing work media tools, like Yammer, IBM Connections, Socialcast, and Podio, to mention just a few.

I am now announcing the 2011 Work Media Survey And Report, which I will be kicking off next week. The goal of the study is to dig up more concrete indicators about work media’s adoption, and the barriers to the application of work media.

If you’d like to be part of the survey group — and get access to early results — please click here to fill out the form.
