Johnston Press starts charging for online local news

One of the UK’s biggest newspaper firms is to charge for access to online content from six of its titles.

They are all lining up, all the media barons. ‘Whoops! Lost our stranglehold! But no worries, we’ll just start charging.’

They should read Seth Godin:

You don’t charge the search engines to send people to articles on your site, you pay them.

If you can’t make money from attention, you should do something else for a living. Charging money for attention gets you neither money nor attention.
