A Short Twitter Exchange on Knowledge Management

[via Twitter]

@ckreutz to @elsua: do you know why there is no KM section on alltop.com?

@stoweboyd to @ckreutz: Because ‘knowledge management’ is an oxymoron

@ckreutz to @stoweboyd: yes true. :-) But how the heck do we call this thing humans do since they are on the earth. Talk and learn? #knowledge management

from @stoweboyd to @ckreutz: When people talk about knowledge management they don’t mean ‘knowledge’ (justified belief) they mean information in people’s heads.

from @stoweboyd to @ckreutz: Knowledge can’t be managed, and even managing information in people’s heads is next to impossible.

from @stoweboyd to @ckreutz: But that doesn’t stop companies from trying. Because the metaphor has snared them.

from @stoweboyd to @ckreutz: Collaboration. communication, and coordination can be helped by tools, and what was closed can be made more open, though.

from @stoweboyd to @ckreutz: And social tools shape culture, but that’s not knowledge management either. So, I think #km is a failed metaphor: let’s let it go.
