Going Back To Remember The Milk, Turning Off Gmail Tasks

I admit it: I was wrong.

I recently wrote about Google’s introduction of Tasks for Gmail (see Hello Gmail Tasks, Bye Bye Remember The Milk) in which I said the Gmail implementation was good enough to get me to switch from Remember the Milk. I was wrong. I am switching back after several weeks of fooling with Gmail’s tasks.

Why?

  1. Gmail’s tasks show up in a tombstone style box, that pops up from the bottom of the browser window:

Gmail tasks, originally uploaded by Stowe Boyd.

The problem is that this a/ conflicts with my use of Twitterfox, which also pops up in the lower right hand corner of my browser, and b/ I really like the RTM feature of having the task visible and accessible in the sidebar. Why can’t Gmail make the Tasks plugin work like the Calendar plugin, instead of like Gtalk?

  2. I like the RTM feature where tasks are ordered by timeframe: overdue, today, tomorrow, this week, next week, later, anytime. With Gmail’s Tasks, I was moving things around manually (see above: move up, move down, etc.), which is just a waste of time.

  3. Seemed to be running really slow, occasionally.

Now I just have to remember how to plug in the alerts from RTM as a calendar in Gcal, and I will be back in business.
