Name Change: /Work Becomes /Irregulars

I have renamed this blog /Irregulars instead of the the very generic /Work. Three reasons:

  1. I am creating a new corporate shell for my work: Brannan Street Irregulars. The concept is to more-or-less continue on doing what it is I do — helping companies build social applications — but to start to bring in other contributors on a project-by-project, mission impossible kind of basis [the TV show, not the movie]. With a nod to Conan Doyle’s Baker Street Irregulars, I have named the company after the street where I live in San Francisco. I like the Irregulars meme: Sherlock Holmes used a network of street urchins to spy for him. He paid each Irregular a shilling a day and a guinea for any serious clue. The head of the networks was Higgins, and so that’s my internal codename in the new network.
  2. I need some sort of corporate façade, and any name will do. I have worn out the fun in others I have used in the past: Work Media, A Working Model, Running Light, and others even I have forgotten.
  3. /Work sounds like I am talking about work in some general way, although I intend to only talk about my work: the work I am involved in. Now I can also blather on about the network I am trying to develop.

So, Irregulars is plural, so I plan to attract a very short list of very skilled operatives. These will be truly the best minds in the game. They will be soloists, or small ensembles, or even large businesses, focused on doing their thing — product strategy, user experience, design, marketing, development — as well as it can be done.

I am in no hurry. I am not trying to fill some roster of names, or make a big splash with five awesome partners’ photos up here. On the contrary: I am constantly on the search for people to bring into projects, and have done so over a dozen times in recent years. I hope to impress some of those souls into joining the Irregulars: although ‘joining’ is perhaps a bit too strong a word for the loose coupling involved. This is more like a Hollywood production company, or hanging around on the corner on a warm summer’s night, so I will just be deputizing people as Irregulars who I have brought into projects, and who I am happy to work with again. But I do want to make some of those team jackets, with “Brannan Street Irregulars” on the back.

For those whose links I have broken by changing the blog name, apologies.
